As cowboys, we take a little time each week to work with some of the younger horses on the ranch, to get them ready to accept a saddle and rider. Tim and Seth have trained horses all of their lives and are familiar with several different methods. We’ve discovered that the ol’ “tie ‘em down, saddle’ em up, crawl on and let ‘er buck” method isn’t the
 best.

At Steens Mountain Guest Ranch many hours are spent on the ground with each horse—teaching, building a relationship and creating mutual respect between horse and rider. Every guest will have the opportunity to help in the ground training of one of these youngsters. Teaching a horse how to lead, turn, stop, back up, flex, and give to pressure are all a part of the ground training that you’ll be able to be a part of as a guest.
